Headteacher’s message

Our Choir and Y6 dancers, represented school brilliantly last Friday at Charltonbury.  They performed to a big crowd and were fantastic.  Thank you to the staff who supported them in their performances and to Charlton for inviting us!

I was so proud of our Year 6 yesterday because their Leaver’s show was incredible.  They demonstrated so many individual talents and their enthusiasm was infectious.  It was a great performance. Thank you to all the family members who were able to join us.

Our Safeguarding Squad, also delivered their final assemblies of the year this week, sharing very important messages about summer safety.  I would like to thank the Year 5 and Year 6 team members for their hard work and contributions to keeping our school safe this year. Mr Yardley and I have really enjoyed working with them.

Well done to everyone who has received a Headteacher Award this week.  I am very proud of you all:

Improving punctuality and safety – September 2023

In order to ensure a safe and efficient start to the school day, from September, we are making some slight changes to our morning procedures. The school gates will continue to open at 8.35am.

Children will be able to enter school at 8.45am.  Classroom doors will be closed at 8.50am.  After this time, children will need to enter school through the double playground doors off the main playground.

The gates to the entrances will be closed by 9am, please exit the school site swiftly to ensure the gates can be closed on time and our site is secure.  Anyone arriving after this time, will need to enter school through the main reception office.

The class teachers will close the school registers by 9am to ensure a prompt start to the first lesson of the day.

Thank you for your continued support.

SEND provision July 2023

Thank you to the parents of SEND pupils, who completed our SEND questionnaire recently.  This was part of our recent SEND review with our attached advisor on 13th June.  Our advisor looked at SEND provision within all classrooms, looked at pupil work, talked to pupils and staff and reviewed the parent questionnaire results. We have now received the feedback and are really pleased that the inclusive nature of our school and hard work of our staff was supported and recognised.  The identified strengths and areas for development are detailed below:

Strengths:

  • Leaders are ambitious for the provision and progress of pupils with SEND: they have applied for funding to enhance the building in order to improve provision and make the environment more suitable to pupils with sensory needs.
  • Provision for pupils with SEND is a priority for the school, particularly since the context of the school is changing and a higher proportion of pupils present with SEND needs. The number of pupils with Education, Health and Care plans (EHCP) has increased significantly.
  •  Provision for pupils with SEND is seen as the responsibility of all, and all SLT roles include SEND.
  • The Headteacher is also involved with SEND provision within the Local Authority and chairs the Inclusive School Forum panel.
  • Teaching Assistants are deployed effectively to support pupils with SEND.
  • The impact of continuing professional development this academic year means staff are better able to meet needs of learners with SEND.
  • Curriculum is ambitious for learners with SEND.
  • Personalised resources are in place where needed.
  • Evidence of tailored, targeted support including pre teaching and opportunities for additional practice, when required.
  • The majority of parents of children with SEND are happy with SEND provision.
  • The majority of parents of children with SEND are happy that they can discuss their child’s needs and provision with the class teachers or the Senco.

Developments:

  • Some parents, would like more opportunities to talk face to face about their Child’s SEND needs so we will offer more opportunities for parents to discuss SEND pupil individual provision maps (IPMs).  From September, there will be opportunity for a face to face meeting with the class teacher, 6 times per year for our send pupils.  Opportunities to meet with the SENCO will be available on request via the school email, or through an appointment booked during our parent consultation evenings.
  • As a school, we will continue to work with external agencies to develop the provision for children with more complex needs or those with Social, Emotional or Mental Health needs. (SEMH).

Thank you for your continued support.  If you have any questions, please contact the office to arrange to speak with Mrs E Smith (Headteacher) or Mrs Y Thorpe (Deputy Headteacher/SENCO).

Message from the Headteacher

We have really enjoyed transition week.  Well done to our Year 6 children who visited their secondary schools, we heard such positive reports about their experiences.  Smooth move on Tuesday morning was lovely.  The children enjoyed getting to visit their new classrooms and meet their new teachers and support staff.   Parents will have opportunity to meet the teacher on Monday after school next week.  Please pop along to your child’s new classroom after school to find out more about the year ahead.

As ever, at times of transition, we do have to say some goodbyes. Miss Preston, Early Years Leader is leaving to pursue an exciting opportunity in an international school.  Having started her teaching career at Apley, Miss Gilbert will be leaving us to take the next steps in her career. Miss Campbell Curtis, will also be leaving to continue her career.  Finally, after an amazing 18 years of dedication to Apley Wood Primary School, Mrs Trudi Smith, senior administrator, will be leaving Apley to pursue an exciting opportunity outside of the education world.  We will miss them all very much, and I would like to say a huge thank you on behalf of our school community and wish them all the very best of luck.

Mrs Rowe starts her maternity leave next Friday, for a very well deserved rest before baby arrives!  We wish her all the best and look forward to hearing how she is after the summer break.

We welcome four new members to our teaching team in September.  Miss Lampitt, year 6 teacher, Miss Perks, year 5 teacher, Mrs Stinson, year 5 teacher and Mr Spragg, year 4 teacher.  They have all visited school this week and will be on site for some other occasions before the end of term.  We look forward to welcoming them to the team in September.

Well done to everyone who achieved a Headteacher’s Award this week:
