Headteacher’s Message – Welcome Back

I hope you all had a lovely summer.  I’m delighted to welcome everyone back to school, it was great to see so many smiley faces this week. I’m really looking forward to the year ahead as we embrace being a part of Reach2 multi academy trust and the relationships and benefits this will bring.

We have some new staff to welcome to our Apley Team this term:

Miss Amber Gilmour (Year 4), Miss Rebecca Price (Year 2) and Miss Millie Pottinger (Year 1) all join our teaching team this term, alongside Miss Nardia Matlub (lunchtime supervisor) and Miss Dawn Searle (Teaching Assistant.)  I’d like to welcome them all to the team, they all bring a great range of skills and I am confident they are going to be an asset to our already strong team.

We also have Miss Sophie Davies joining us this year as a trainee teacher through Reach Teach, a DfE accredited training provider of Initial Teacher Training.  Miss Davies will predominantly be working within the Reception classes.

I am also delighted to share the news that Mrs Emma Mumford, whom many of you will already know from our KS1 team, will be taking on the role of Pastoral Lead.  Mrs Mumford has a lot of previous experience in this role, and will be supporting our children and families with her roles in safeguarding, early help and attendance. Pop and say hello when you see her on the main playground gate in the mornings, or contact the office if you would like to make an appointment.

Please do check the parent area of our website this year, as letters, newsletter and diary dates are available.  Just click on the orange parents area tab to access this information.

Wishing you a good weekend.

Mrs Smith

Behaviour Policy and new Behaviour Curriculum

Behaviour and attitudes is a key feature of school life about which there should be a clear, shared understanding between the Head Teacher, all staff, parents/carers, governors and children.

We have high expectations of behaviour at Apley Wood Primary Academy and are proud that pupil behaviour and our calm environment are regularly commented on positively by visitors to school.  Following pupil voice activities, parental feedback and collaboration with our Reach2 cluster schools over the last academic year, we have developed our positive behaviour curriculum which defines our high expectations very clearly.  Staff have received training on our new behaviour curriculum and it is being launched with our children through classroom activities and assemblies.  You can see the updated behaviour policy and behaviour curriculum on the policies page of the website.  If you would like a paper copy, please contact the office. We value parental support in maintaining our high expectations and ensuring that school remains a calm, purposeful and safe learning environment for everyone.

Free football lessons through McDonalds

FREE kids’ football sessions – For ages 5-11 with FA-qualified coaches. Register online at McDonald’s

Please see information below which you may wish to share with parents (https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/deals/m/mcdonalds.html)

This deal is Golden Arches meets Golden Balls… McDonald’s has partnered with UK football associations to run a series of free football sessions for kids aged 5-11 over autumn.

If your child has a goal of being the next David Beckham or Leah Williamson, you can score these free coaching lessons now. The sessions are taking place at over 1,500 locations on selected dates from Saturday 7th September until Saturday 30th November, and include one-hour coaching each week from FA-qualified coaches.

There’s no obligation to buy or eat anything at McDonald’s in order to get these sessions – they’re totally free to attend – you just need to pre-book online by filling in the form at McDonald’s ‘Fun Football and selecting which centre you’d like to attend.

You can register for up to five children, and it’s mainly aimed at those who aren’t currently playing, with sessions focussing on basic footballing technique. You’ll need to provide your own suitable footwear and football clothing. Pan-disability and visual impairment sessions will also be available. Kids can attend as many sessions as they please (there’s no limit on attendance), but slots are booked on a first-come, first-served basis so go quick if there’s a certain date or time you want to attend.

See McDonald’s for full terms & conditions and frequently asked questions.

Football not your preferred sport? See how you can get free tennis lessons.

Parking Concerns – Please be courteous (06.09.2024)

Please can we remind you to be courteous when parking in the surrounding streets near our school.

Library Redesign

Before the summer, our library was closed off to the pupils for the last two weeks so that it could undergo a revamp. During the summer, Mrs Corrigan dedicated many hours to this task and has created an absolutely transformed library space with fresh, sky-coloured walls, woodland themed wall coverings, cushions, cuddly toys and an amazing 3D tree. A massive thank you to Mrs Corrigan for creating such a lovely space where all of our children can spend time listening to stories and choosing their own library books. A big thank you also to FAWS for funding some of these changes.

First week back!

What a great first week back we have had in Year 3! We started off this week by looking at the expectations of this year, and then Base 9 and 10 got together to predict what our new Love to Read book will be, based on the clues provided. We had lots of correct guesses- we will be reading Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl! On Wednesday, we spent the afternoon ordering events in chronological order and learnt all about the 3 eras of the Stone Age.
