60 Second Active Challenges

Are you up for the challenge?

Each day this week I’d like you to have a go at a 60 second active challenge. Time 60 seconds and see how high you can score! What personal best can you achieve? Can you even achieve bronze, silver or gold?

Monday: Around the World Challenge       Miss Whitehouse’s score: 36 (I used a pillow)

Tuesday: Tuck In Tuck Out Challenge      Miss Whitehouse’s score: 17 (tired legs now!)

Wednesday: Catch and Clap Challenge  Miss Whitehouse’s score: 38 (I used a teddy)*

Thursday: Step Ups Challenge   Miss Whitehouse’s score: 32 (try to get into a rhythm)**

Friday: Obstacle Challenge        Miss Whitehouse’s score: 29 (now to tidy up!)

Keep a record of your score each day (or ask an adult to) then share with me how well you’ve done. Can you set a record for your year group?

I’ll update the post each day with my score. Can you challenge me?

Email your name, base and achievements (and photos as I’d love to see you in action!) to: april.whitehouse@taw.org.uk

Stay Active! Stay Healthy!

* for the catch and clap challenge I used a balloon first and scored 29, so I tried using a teddy to challenge myself and got a new personal best!

** I tried this 8 times! My personal best was 32 and my legs couldn’t physically move up and down the step any quicker! I’m very curious whether anyone can achieve silver (or even gold) because my tired legs are telling me that it’s impossible!

Weekly Challenge

This week, we would like you to create a new cereal design!

As our topic this term is Fairtrade, we would like the cereal to be Fairtrade. Here are some ideas of what you could do:

  • Design the packaging of the cereal – think about a brand name, slogan and interactive box design
  • Design the cereal – think about the Fairtrade ingredients that you would use
  • Make the packaging and cereal

I’m sure you will all have lots of other ideas too!

Here is an example of an interactive cereal box.

Happy designing!

Home updates

Miss Morgan and I have received some great photos from Harley and Sophie showing us some of the lovely things they’ve been up to.

Harley looks very proactive balancing his outdoor time with his indoor learning! He’s been keeping fit doing PE with Joe, using Twinkl resources to practise his maths skills and then putting his gardening skills to the test out in the sun!

Sophie has been making the most of the sun with her little sister. They’ve been baking some cakes and going for nice walks with their dog. It’s lovely to see your happy faces.

Thank you both for sending in your fab photos- we love seeing what you’re all up to!

Weekly Challenge

Thank you Kassy and Naabea for completing the weekly challenge last week. Your pieces of artwork look amazing!

Kassy has drawn her room as she has been redecorating it. She has drawn some of the items that are on her walls in her newly decorated room.

Naabea’s artwork shows that she has been doing lots of baking – we would love to be able to try what you’ve made.

Well done both. We have loved seeing your fantastic creations!

VE Day celebrations

The children had a fantastic time celebrating VE Day today. They had a really fun-filled day creating bravery medals for people of their choice, decorating tea-cups and launching planes to celebrate the end of the war. They all worked really hard and had smiles on their faces the whole time! Happy VE Day everybody!

VE Day

As VE Day is approaching tomorrow, here is a Free VE Day Podcast from History Storytime.

Sophie (aged 7) and Ellie (aged 4) are sad to be missing the VE Day celebrations because of the Coronavirus. They had been planning a VE Day street party but now they are trapped at home. So with their Daddy they tell the story of the VE Day celebrations. They learn how awful World War 2 had been. They understand just how relieved ordinary people were to put it all behind them. They get swept up in the VE Day Party atmosphere of 75 years ago.

Free STEM Activities (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths)

Leanne Mee, the Managing Director of the STEM Workshop, has emailed schools to inform them of STEM activities she is doing online for everyone.

Leanne created a bank of prerecorded activities which are all accessible via Kids You Tube – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5LL4_akNrPr2fKT6EGCuBw?view_as=subscriber

You Tube Tutorials

Leanne has created a range of short focused activities (as tutorials) that the children can get involved in using materials that you they find in and around the home. The tutorials are all linked to the STEM curriculum.

The tutorials she has created so far focus on: Computer Aided Design, Mechanisms (joining materials and components to explore movement) and structures. They can be followed step by step, but she encourages everyone to explore and experiment with size and materials etc.

She is adding a new tutorial every Monday, and is working to create ones that can be carried out at home but will also have more complex ones too. Leanne said it would be wonderful if the children wanted to share ideas with her of what type of products or themes they would like to see, and she will happily mention and credit them for their idea.

Challenges

Every month Leanne is planning on setting a challenge with a prize attached to make it a little more fun and engaging.

This months challenge is to design and make the tallest freestanding structure, details of this can be found on The STEM Workshop, You Tube Channel (above). You will find the challenge, the criteria and date the entry needs to be submitted.

Entries to be submitted as either a photo or a video:

Date of submission – Friday 29th May

Winner Announced – Monday 1st June

It would be great to see some STEM projects being completed at home and for children from Apley Wood, competing with other children from other schools in the area.

If you complete any STEM activities, please send over your photographs to me and I can upload them onto the website for all to see – helen.gilbert@taw.org.uk

Good luck and stay safe!

Miss Gilbert

Amazing video!

This morning we received a brilliant video from Alyssa in response to the video that the school shared on the website yesterday. It was SUCH a lovely video and an extremely thoughtful idea! It featured lovely messages from some familiar faces and a series of photos to show what great memories they’ve made at Apley.

Thank you to: Alyssa, Harley, Callum, Kassy, Chelsea, Grace, Sophie, Lauren, Evie, Danielle and Naabea for being part of such an amazing video!

It’s lovely things like this that keep us smiling!

Weekly Challenge!

This week, we would love to see some different pieces of art work. We would like you to create a piece of art that reflects how you have been spending your time over the past month. Be creative! This could be done as a drawing, painting or collage. I’m sure you will all have some fantastic ideas.

Remember to send your pictures to us:
