Science in forest school- 26.9.24

Today, Year 3 took their science learning into forest school. We had a question to investigate: ‘Does the taller a person is mean they have longer bones?’. The children used metre ruler sticks to measure their height, skull, femur and humorous. They decided that a child’s height did not impact the length of their bones, and we had an interesting discussion about whether this is because they are still growing and if this will change when they are older and stop growing. Bonnie even joined base 9 for their session!

A cave man invasion! 25.9.24

Lots of cave men seem to have invaded Apley Wood Primary Academy yesterday afternoon!

In our history topic, we have been learning all about the Stone Age. An important part of the Stone Age was the cave art that they used to decorate their walls with. Year 3 went out onto the playground and created their own cave art, drawing pictures of animals, human figures and Stone Age characters inspired by the photographs they had seen of real cave art.

Hook into Writing- 25.6.24

Yesterday morning, Year 3 were introduced to their new book and genre in English. We listened to the story of Rosa Parks and then did a quiz to test our knowledge. We then got into groups and freeze-framed the famous scene of Rosa on the bus, thinking about how each of the people involved might have been feeling.

Hook into Writing- Dave’s Cave 10.9.24

Today, Year 3 went out into forest school for their English ‘Hook into Writing’ lesson. We listened to the story ‘Dave’s Cave’ which we are going to be focusing on before having a go at making our own Stone Age caves. We discussed the moral of the story as well as what makes a good place to settle.

First week back!

What a great first week back we have had in Year 3! We started off this week by looking at the expectations of this year, and then Base 9 and 10 got together to predict what our new Love to Read book will be, based on the clues provided. We had lots of correct guesses- we will be reading Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl! On Wednesday, we spent the afternoon ordering events in chronological order and learnt all about the 3 eras of the Stone Age.

Welcome to Year 3!

Welcome back and welcome to Year 3!

We hope that you have all had a fantastic summer and we can’t wait to get started tomorrow.

Please find below some useful information for the year:

Each week, starting from week 2, spelling and maths homework will be set.

Spellings will be sent home each week stuck in the children’s reading records. Please can you ensure that your child copies out their spellings each night and practices for the following Friday before we have our spelling test.

Maths homework is set via MyMaths every Friday and should be completed by the following Thursday.

Please try to read with your child as much as possible at home and question them on what they are reading – ideally 3x a week.

Our PE days are Monday (indoors) and Thursday (outdoors) so please send your child into school wearing their school PE kit on those days.

Each pupil has their own Times Table Rock Stars login. It would be very beneficial to your child if they could play on this at least weekly- they may even win a certificate! In Year 3, we focus on the 3x, 4x and 8x tables.

This page will be updated with photographs and important information regularly, but please do not hesitate to contact school if there are any other questions.

Thank you,

Mrs Hindle and Miss Dovydaitis

Year 3 STEAM dress up- 15.7.24

It was lovely to see such a range of STEAM careers represented yesterday by Year 3 children. We had a great morning discussing what a scientist does in their day to day job.
