Creative Topic Based Activity – Summer 1 – Week 1

Each week, Reception will provide a range of exciting challenges for you to undertake at home. These particular topic based activities I am setting support and challenge your child across many of the Development Matters – Areas of Learning, with an emphasis on Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. Please have fun with them together as a family and send us pictures to share on our school website. They are just example activities and there is no pressure to complete each one, each week.

Week 1

Focus: How do we know it’s Spring?

Activity: Together, create nature paint brushes. Collect sticks and attach a range of natural resources to the end to form the brush.

Key Questions:

  • What materials will we need to gather? Can we record these items as a list?
  • What works well? How could we improve our paint brushes?
  • What does Spring look like? Can we draw/paint a picture of Spring?

Our thank you message

Some of the children, who were in school during the first week of Easter, have created a video with a thank you message and a reminder to have faith. They used chalk to write words of thanks and decorate images of hope. Enjoy!

Don’t forget to watch the daily phonics lessons by RWI teachers. They are on the site for 24 hours so don’t worry if you miss them. Click the link below:

Reception Literacy Challenge

This week’s literacy challenge is all about springtime. Can you use these sentence starters to write some interesting things about spring?

I can see…

I can smell…

I can hear…

I can touch…

I can taste…

Miss Smith’s phonics group – ask your helper to write the sentence starter then work together to sound out your ideas and finish the sentence with a full stop.

Mrs Yale’s / Mrs Parrish’s /Miss Holbrook’s phonics groups – ask your helper to help by showing you how to write the sentence starter and sounding out your ideas together. Then ask them to hide it away and try the sentence by yourself. Don’t forget your full stop.

Ms Wilson’s group – ask your helper to help by showing you how to write the sentence starter and sounding out your ideas together. Think of some interesting describing words and try joining two ideas together using and. Then ask them to hide it away and try the sentence by yourself. Don’t forget your full stop.

For example, you could write I can hear bees buzzing. I can smell sweet flowers.

We look forward to seeing your work 🙂
