Items from home

We are seeing an increase in toys and items being brought into school from home which is causing issues.  These include, pencil cases, toys, football and pokemon cards, and balls and they are causing problems due to arguments or children losing them. This is then causing staff to have waste learning time in sorting out these completely avoidable issues. We have all the resources that children need for their learning and breaktimes in school and items should not be brought in from home without consent of the class teacher or a member of the senior leadership team.

We currently have a collection of lost toys and items from home in the office and we are unsure who they belong to. These will be disposed of by the end of term if they are not collected.  Staff have discussed this in assembly this week and during our pupil voice activities about lunchtime and we would really appreciate your support in ensuring these items stay at home.

Headteacher’s Message

I am delighted to start the half term with some more positive news.  We have been awarded Artsmark Silver Award by Arts Council England.

‘Apley Wood Primary School has made good progress throughout its Artsmark journey on a number of fronts. Taken together, the developments with regard to STEAM week, music tuition, DT, Dance and Art teaching termly and the much greater visibility and value given to the arts generally through the display and sharing of creative work has laid very solid foundations from which to build off in the future.

The staff have worked very hard to improve and develop our Arts curriculum offer following the pandemic and I am really pleased that our improved Arts curriculum offer has been recognised.

Congratulations to everyone who has received a Headteacher Award this week:

Rashidah W, Lily H, Jack T, Avani M, Aaron A, Phoebe P, Remi C, Monty M, Ethen H, Rayyan A, Rory P, Leah L, Jasmine W, Joseph M, Alexander P, Amelia P, Ivan K, Finley H, Ronny H, Harrison T, Sophia M, Amira A, Lois A, Musa S, Keeley H-M, Joseph P, Base 4, Madi S, Mehreen W.

Attendance

We are following the DFE attendance guidance, ‘Working Together to Improve School Attendance’ (DfE May 22).

For children to gain the greatest benefit from their education it is vital that they attend regularly, and your child should be at school in good time for the start of the school day, every day the school is open, unless they are genuinely ill or there is some other unavoidable reason.

Some children are reluctant to go to school and say they do not feel well. It is for you as the adult, to judge whether they are genuinely unwell, or just unwilling. It will be better for them in the long run to go to school, rather than avoid it, as days off mean they will fall further behind and make them even more reluctant. As the parent, it is your responsibility to work with school to encourage them to attend. If you have concerns about your child attending, please contact school via the main email and we can discuss your concerns and support if necessary.

Thank you to everyone for your support with the timings at the start of the school day.  The vast majority of pupils are now in school on time, before classroom doors close at 8:50am which is ensuring a really smooth start to the day in our classrooms.

You may wonder why school would be concerned if your child’s attendance is 95% or below, and why you may be receiving communication from us about this.

This may make it easier to understand:

Even the most enthusiastic learner will find it hard to keep up with their work with these levels of absence. That is why we encourage the highest attendance possible and we thank you for your continued support.

Headteacher’s Message – 27.10.2023

We end the first half term of this school year and what a successful half term it has been, everyone deserves a well earned rest! Well done to the final group of Year 6 who have completed bikeability this week, we are very proud of their achievements.

The Local Authority have asked schools to remind Year 6 parents and carers that the last date to apply for a Secondary school place is 31st October.  Thank you to those families who have already completed this.
