Base 3’s trip to RAF Cosford Museum

Base 3 have had a fantastic time visiting Cosford today. All of the children enjoyed learning about the different planes and helicopters. Some of them were huge – big enough to fit tanks inside. We also had a super time making our own rockets and then firing them across the hangar. Trying on RAF uniforms from different periods of history was also great fun. Well done for the great behaviour and I look forward to your writing about the visit next week.

Y2 Hook into a Book – 19/2/24

Year 2 have really enjoyed finding out about our new text for our Love to Read lessons this half term. They were very surprised to discover a space capsule in Base 3 after lunch. When they opened it there were all kinds of space related clues about the text, including a planetarium, a map of the solar system and a tiny rocket that they watched blast off. They are now looking forward to reading the book, ‘Space Race’ by Malorie Blackman to find out if their predictions are correct.

Test Pilots – 5/2/24

As part of our history topic Y2 have been looking at how the design of planes has changed since the first flights by the Wright Brothers. As part of this, we have made and tested paper planes and looked at the features of modern aircraft including the pointed nose cone and the sharp edged wings. We found that after adding these features to our planes they flew much further.

Changing Materials – 31/1/24

Year 2 have been busy learning about materials in our science lesson today. We were testing whether materials could be changed by twisting, bending, stretching and squashing them. We really enjoyed testing the materials and describing how these actions changed them.

Forest School 25/1/24

Year 2 had a fantastic Forest School session with Mr Yardley on Thursday. We were asked to design a suit for astronauts to train in. The suit needed to be waterproof, so we tested lots of materials to see which was the most suitable. Mrs Beardwood and Miss Craig were very pleased with our super listening and teamwork skills.

Year 2 Love to Read

Mrs Beardwood’s Love to Read group received a surprise in the post today. They were joined by a new member called ‘Stanley Lambchop’ who arrived folded into an envelope. Stanley, or Flat Stanley as he is usually called, is their focus book for this half term and the group have had fun today predicting some of the adventures he will have. We can’t wait to start reading later in the week.

The Big Little Nativity – 14th and 15th December 2023

Well done to all the children in KS1 for their wonderful Nativity performances this week. They have all worked really hard to learn their lines, songs and actions to make sure they put on a truly entertaining show. Thank you to everyone who attended one of the performances – we hope you enjoyed watching. Apley Wood really does have some really talented actors, singers and dancers.

Forest School – 9/11/23

Year 2 have had a fantastic history lesson in the Forest School area, learning all about the Great Fire of London. We found out how the fire developed and about the timeline of events. In groups, we then used natural materials to create images of each event. There was some super creativity and use of materials to represent people, places and of course, the flames. Well done Year 2 and thank you to Mr Yardley and Mrs Jones. We can’t wait for our next lesson!

Forest School – this half term

This half term, Year 2 will have their learning taken out into forest school each Thursday. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to experience learning outside and see how learning and the natural world often go hand in hand. Our focus will be all about ‘The Great Fire of London’.

As we approach winter now, we advise that children bring a spare pair of shoes, this could be wellies or old trainers as the site may be muddy. We would also like them to bring a coat as we will still be learning out there even if it is raining. They will not need anything else other than this as they should still be coming to school in full school uniform.

Thank you for your support with this and we look forward to some super learning outdoors!

Pep the Poet – 7/11/23

Year 2 had fabulous fun working with Pep the Poet today. We loved reciting the poems and doing all of the actions. Some of us even got to dress up as scarecrows. We were really good at putting in the missing rhyming words, even if we got them wrong sometimes!

Thank you very much Pep – we would love for you to come again!
