Earth Day 2024

On Monday, Year 4 celebrated Earth Day! Our focus this year was on ‘Planet vs Plastic’. We explored the positives, and negatives, of plastic use and had fantastic discussions linked to our Science topic on how plastic can impact living things. We created a poster on how we can be more sustainable in school and discussed ways, as individuals, we can help the environment.

We discussed the importance of recycling and how plastic can be reused. We then created plant pots out of plastic bottles to reuse plastic for a purpose that creates life. Our cress has already began to grow in class!

Forest School

This week, Year 4 had their first forest school session focusing on our new topic in Art ‘painting’. The children were introduced to the artist Lucy Arnold and her artwork based on nature. Their task was to explore the forest area and find facts about Lucy which they recorded in their sketchbooks.

Hook into a Book

This week a giant peach appeared in our classroom! We have been predicting where it came from, and why it is so huge. We watched an intriguing video introducing us to James and his despicable aunts. We gathered our ideas together and came to the conclusion we are going to be reading James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl.

Red Nose Day

Thank you to all children who participated in our ‘Student vs Teacher’ competition today to raise money and support Red Nose Day. The children all looked fantastic in their red outfits. Year 4 had a great time beating the teachers!

World Book Day

On Monday, Apley Wood celebrated World Book Day in school. The children came dressed as a book character or author, and they brought a book to share with them.

We had a fantastic morning listening to local author Sarah Griffiths’ new book ‘Tom’s Gift’. In the afternoon, we had a lovely dear time session, sharing our stories with children in Reception and Year 1.

Look at the fantastic outfits Base 11 came in!

Design and Technology- Potatoes

This week Year 4 have been introduced with their new DT topic… potatoes.

The children discussed their prior knowledge about how potatoes are grown and what they are used for. Over the next couple of weeks, the children will be exploring potato recipes and having a go at cooking some cheesy mash and potato chips. Yum!

Hook into a Book

This week we were introduced to our new Love to Read book ‘Escape from Pompeii’. The children enjoyed investigating the front cover and blurb, and guessing what was going to happen. It is wonderful to see the children’s enthusiasm and the links they are making to their Extreme Earth topic in Geography.

We hope you have a lovely weekend!

Religious Education

Year 4 have started their new topic in RE, ‘Does a beautiful world mean a beautiful God?’. This week we explored the beauty of nature, and how God could have influenced this. The photos show some fantastic work from Base 11!

Love to Read

This week we have began our Love to Read lessons. Year 4 returned to school after the holidays to find a mysterious bag left. We used our investigation skills to question where this bag is from and who it belongs to. In the bottom of the bag was a book called ‘Smile!’. From reading the blurb, we discovered the bag belonged to Flash who had been in a plane crash and ended up having to be saved in the desert. We can’t wait to find out what happened to him…
